    Yes, you must pass the Louisiana gifted entrance exam to participate in the gifted classes. Please coordinate this effort with your child's teacher or School Guidance Counselor.

    North Polk Elementary - Head Start, Pre-K & 1st Grades South Polk Elementary - 2nd - 4th Grades


  • What school will my child(ren) attend?
    The housing area in which you reside determines the school assigned. With some exceptions, most families residing on Fort Polk who have children in grades K-4th attend on-post schools. Those in grades 5-12 will attend schools in Leesville.


  • Is my child required to attend the school he/she is assigned?
    No, the Vernon Parish School Board has an "Open Enrollment Policy" that states you may enroll your child in any school within the school district with two stipulations. One, you must agree to provide transportation for your child to and from school. Two, the Principal of the receiving school must approve the enrollment. This approval is usually based on space availability for your child's grade level. The schools are required to reserve space for the "assigned" students.


  • Is there bus transportation to the off-post schools?
    Yes, bus information is available at your child's school upon enrollment.


  • Are school uniforms worn?
    Yes, the color depends upon the school attended.


  • What type of SPED programs does Vernon Parish have?

  • What curriculum is used?
    State approved curriculum is used based on benchmarks and standards as required by the Louisiana State Department of Education.

    This varies depending on the enrollment population of the school. Most schools offer basketball, baseball, and track. Please visit the Vernon Parish Schools and Beauregard Parish Schools links for specific school information.


  • Is corporal punishment administered in the schools and if so, what type?
    Yes, corporal punishment (paddling) is allowed in the state of Louisiana. However, most schools will allow parents to sign an agreement to pick their child up from school if they do not want their child paddled. Please make your request known upon registering your child for school.


  • What age can my child(ren) start Kindergarten?
    Your child(ren) must be 5 years of age by September 30th.


  • What information is needed to register my child in Vernon Parish School System?
